Has the FTSE ever moved on the back of an England World cup game?
The effects of the English national football team results on FTSE100 stock market returns have been analysed by Ashton, Gerrard & Hudson (2003). Although the sample was all national games not only World Cup games, they found a significant correlation between national football results and FTSE stock returns.They stated that good (bad) performances by the national team were followed by good (bad) market returns.
