What to do if you lose a check?
If it is a check for your own account, notify your bank immediately and order a stop payment on the check. The bank just needs the check number. If the check comes through, the bank will not honor it.

If the check was written to you from another party (a paycheck for example) notify the issuer of the check so they can notify their bank and issue a stop payment order. They can then write you another check.
