What was Japan like after World War 1?
Japan's economy was a bit depressed after World War I. Just like everyone else's. But remember that Japan sided with the Allies against Germany in that conflict - unlike their choice in the second global conflict. Japan had been kicking butt in the western Pacific since before the turn of the century. They'd stepped on China, taken over in Korea and beat down the Russians in the area. After the end of WWI, they consolidated and regrouped and continued their expansionist activities. There was some attempt to bring in a democracy in the 20's, but the military had a great deal of power, and they were able to muscle aside the movement and maintain their authority. They continued to be tough on their neighbors (they killed several million over the 50 years or so that they held sway in the region) right up to the latter part of WWII when their military was spread thin and taking heavy hits. Things came to a screaching halt for them when the atomic bombs fell and they surrendered unconditionally.
